Dear Students, Parents and Guardians,
Welcome!! I hope you have had a great start to this school year and I'm looking forward to meeting many of you on Back to School Night and throughout the year! I just wanted to send you a quick note with a couple of important details which will help make this a successful year.
1) I Love COMMUNICATION! Please call or email me with any questions/concerns. I will do the same for you.
2) One year of Fine Arts is a Graduation Requirement (Fine Art= Art 1, band, theater, orchestra, choir, dance) while I sincerely hope your student gains a lifelong appreciation for the arts, this class has state mandated curriculum that must be taught and should be though of with the same importance level as a core class.
3) Sketchbook assignments are 100% homework, meaning that there is little or no time dedicated in class to working on them. This homework is very important as it reinforces the things we study in class, was talked about specifically in the Class syllabus, and the students are currently receiving the list of assignments for the ENTIRE semester. I do there HW assignments this way because Art 1 has a very diverse student body, and with that diversity comes a lot of accommodations.
Instead of assigning it today and expecting it the next class, students can turn it in for full credit anytime during that two week window, giving the students greater opportunity to successfully earn 100% as they can get feedback and help if they bring it in early. This gives much more time for a successful grade, rather than assigning it for the next class and reducing 10% each day following. The goal of this window and full semester of deadlines given at the beginning is to encourage students to develop good time management practices.
Excused absences (doctor, sick with parents note, field trip, etc) are not held against students but I do encourage them to turn in the work earlier in the two week window if they know a head of time, like they would for a field trip, that they are going to be out. That way they learn to be proactive about their grades, instead of reactive.
Two weeks is a lot of time to do one HW assignment, which is why I have to be firm about deadlines. Students are able to practice time management and hold themselves accountable for their work so that they turn it in within that window.
4) If your child is absent or behind on their work, I am available for tutoring during Lunch on Tuesday and during FIT time. If you have any conflicts, please let me know and I will be happy to work on scheduling alternate sessions.
All other Lunch periods are also available as open work studio time, though I will not be available for one-on-one tutoring. Students can use these times to come in to catch up on projects where they may have fallen behind.
Thank you for taking the time to read this through! Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns. Together we can make this a great year filled with visual ART! I look forward to working with you all!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Burnham
