Art 1 is a Core Curriculum class and aims to teach to the whole child with a focus on creative thinking, diverse problem solving skills, and time management reinforcement. These components of art education are essential skills for the whole child and for their future careers.
Objectives:
The primary purpose of this class is to introduce and build an understanding of 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional communication. The students will be expected to develop a working knowledge of a variety of artistic media, while increasing their ability to see, analyze and use formal elements of art in their projects, required writing assignments, and classroom dialogue. The students will be creating links between the work that they create and a variety of art movements, visual images and artists throughout history.
The class is built by allowing the students to experiment with the arts and the many mediums that are available, but it is also structured to provide students with a strong foundation in design, drawing, construction, and vocabulary.

School Wide RulesAll Austin High School and District rules apply, and will be observed in my classroom. If the student does not already have one, obtain a copy of these rules from the office or online at http://www.austinhighmaroons.org/students/code-of-conduct.
(Examples – NO Cell Phone use in class, Tardy Policy, Absences and No Credit Policy, etc.)
Entering the ClassroomAll students should enter the classroom quietly and be seated at their Assigned Seats before the bell rings. Failure to follow the seating chart may result in a student being accidentally marked tardy/absent.
Absences It is the responsibility of the student to let me know if he/she will be missing school for an excused absence so that the proper accommodations can be made to ensure that the student stays on task with the rest of the class. It is the responsibility of the students to ask for and make-up missed work.
Tutoring is available during FIT time and Tuesday during Lunch. Additional times may be available by request. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday Lunch is an open studio/independent work time.
Expectations and Grading Policy:
Each six weeks the students will be required to successfully turn in the following projects/assignments:
Daily Grades (40%):
Projects Grades (40%): each six weeks, students will complete 1-3 long-term art projects, i.e. an acrylic painting, a self-portrait in pastels. The students will receive the following grades for these assignments.
Professionalism (20%)
Supplies and tools are an essential part of the art room environment and in order for all of the students to achieve success this material must be maintained. Any tool that a student uses must be thoroughly cleaned and returned to its original home. ANY STUDENT FOUND DESTROYING ART SUPPLIES WILL BE ISSUED DETENTION, A CALL WILL BE MADE HOME AND THE ITEM MUST BE REPLACED. NO WARNINGS. I must be very strict on this issue and misuse of materials will not be tolerated.
Final Six Weeks Average:
40% Project Grade (1-3 completed major art projects)
40% Short Term Grades (Daily Grades, Material Maintenance and Clean-up, Six Weeks Exam)
20% Professionalism (Deadlines and Citizenship)

2) 1 PAPER TOWEL ROLL or BOX OF KLEENEX (dollar store!)
3) ART KIT: Asel Art supply has put together a limited number of supply kits for a discounted price. These kits will be delivered to the High School and students will bring in a check made out to Austin High School or cash to purchase. * Please send in the supply fee of $31.00 between August 31st and September 16th via cash, check (made out to Austin High School) or Money Order

- Express personal feelings, thoughts, and reactions through oral, written, and creative means.

- Increase listening and viewing skills and promote an appreciation for the arts.
- Improve critical analysis skills by developing an appreciation for various art forms.
- Develop interdisciplinary projects relative to or reflective of the arts.

- Warm-ups, Sketchbook assignments, Art History Slide Identifications/ Activities, Critiques, Quiz, etc. The sketchbooks are part of the student supply kit and will have ample space for required sketching, class notes, self-expression, and class assignments.
- Six Weeks Quiz: A written and performance exam may be given during each six weeks to test knowledge of specific art terms, art history, and techniques.
Projects Grades (40%): each six weeks, students will complete 1-3 long-term art projects, i.e. an acrylic painting, a self-portrait in pastels. The students will receive the following grades for these assignments.
- One to Two daily/on task grade(s) during each project
- One Project grade (final grade when completed - rubrics with grading criteria are given at the beginning of each assignment)
Professionalism (20%)
- Deadlines (10%): Cumulative analysis of the students on time work habits on all assignments. Any assignment turned in late will result in a 5% loss per day in this grading category.
- Citizenship (10%): On Task and respectful behavior from bell to bell. All materials handled appropriately and returned to correct spaces.
