Objectives:
The class is built by allowing the students to experiment with ceramics and other 3D media (Mosaic, Wire, Paper sculpture, Glass) and the many mediums that are available, but it is also structured to provide students with a strong foundation in design, construction, and vocabulary.
Course Standards:
Students will
School Wide Rules: All Austin High School and District rules apply, and will be observed in my classroom. If the student does not already have one, obtain a copy of these rules from the office. (Examples – NO Cell Phone use in class, Campus Wide Late Work Policy) **School Policies in Handbook
Entering the Classroom: All students should enter the classroom quietly and be seated at their Assigned Seats before the bell rings. Failure to follow the seating chart may result in a student being accidentally marked tardy/absent.
Tardy Policy/ Absences: 3 Tardys= Saturday SchoolIt is the responsibility of the student to let me know if he/she will be missing school for an excused absence so that the proper accommodations can be made to ensure that the student stays on task with the rest of the class. It is the responsibility of the students to ask for and make-up missed work.
Tutoring is available on BDays from 8:30-9am. Lunch is an open studio/independent work time. Additional times may be available by request.
Expectations and Grading Policy:
Each six weeks the students will be required to successfully turn in the following projects/assignments:
Daily Grades: Warm-ups, Sketchbook assignments, Art History Slide Identifications/ Activities, Critiques, etc. The sketchbooks are part of the student supply kit and will have ample space for required sketching, class notes, self-expression, and class assignments.
Sketchbook assignments ARE HOMEWORK, students are given the full list at the beginning of the semester, and these can be turned in for full credit during a two week window ending with the date on their assignment sheet. As sketchbooks can be turned in at ANY point during the two week window, I do not accept late sketchbook assignments (unless the student has an excused absence for the last date).
Long Term Art Projects: each six weeks, students will complete 1-3 long-term art projects, i.e. a clay lantern, set of dishes, coil sculpture. The students will receive the following grades for these assignments.
Material Maintenance and Clean Up: Supplies and tools are an essential part of the art room environment and in order for all of the students to achieve success this material must be maintained. Any tool that a student uses must be thoroughly cleaned and returned to its original home. ANY STUDENT FOUND DESTROYING ART SUPPLIES WILL BE ISSUED DETENTION, A CALL WILL BE MADE HOME AND THE ITEM MUST BE REPLACED. NO WARNINGS. I am very strict on this issue and misuse of materials will not be tolerated.
Six Weeks Quiz: A written and performance exam may be given during each six weeks to test knowledge of specific art terms, art history, and techniques.
Final Six Weeks Average:
50% Project Grade (1-3 completed major art projects)
50% Short Term Grades (Daily Grades, Material Maintenance and Clean-up, Six Weeks Exam, Participation)
AHS Late Work Policy:
Student may submit assignments up to 4 days after original due date with a 10 pt penalty per day late. After 4 days a student may earn up to a 50 for completion of assignment or alternative assignment comparable to original assignment, in the classroom with teacher. This assignment must be completed no later than 1 week prior to the last day of the grading period.
Competitions
Every student enrolled in advanced art (Jewelry II/III/IV) is required to participate in at least one major art competition during the year. VASE is a UIL event that provides a wonderful forum for critique and learning to the students, and is the main art competition that Austin High students participate in. If a student is unavailable on the day of VASE, they must participate in one of the several other competition forums that are open to high school art students (Scholastic, Art House, etc.). This participation is required and will be considered as a project grade.
